City of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Adriatic," is a prominent city in southeastern Croatia, located on the southern coast of the Adriatic Sea. It serves as a major administrative, judicial, financial, economic, scientific, educational, and cultural center within the region. The city's well-preserved medieval architecture and historic walls have earned it a designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

As of the 2021 Census, Dubrovnik had a population of 41,562 residents.

The city's origins trace back to around 614 AD, when it was founded as Ragusa, or Ragusium, by Roman refugees fleeing the Avar and Slav sack of Epidaurum. Over the centuries, Dubrovnik developed into a significant maritime republic, achieving considerable economic and cultural prosperity, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries. The city's rich history is evident in its numerous historical structures, including the Rector's Palace, dating from the 15th century, which served as the seat of government for the Dubrovnik Republic and is considered a masterpiece of Dalmatian architecture. Additionally, the city's fortifications, such as the sea walls and the Minc̆eta Fortress, showcase its historical significance and architectural heritage.

Today, Dubrovnik continues to be a vital cultural and tourist destination, attracting visitors worldwide to its historic sites and scenic beauty. (From Encyclopedia Britannica).
